planet maya: press

Maya is an extraordinary artist from Macedonia, a singer and a songwriter, a composer and a piano virtuoso.

A performer from the age of 10, the music of her adult life has been tempered by the unfolding tragedy of her Balkan homeland, tingeing the natural optimism and exuberance of her songs with hints of darkness and melancholy.

Moving to England in 1992, in 1995 she released her debut album, Cross of Silence, to critical acclaim.

Q Magazine in particular gave it a four star review, saying:

"This is the point where ambient, dance, world and classical music all meet, at a crossroads of quiet dignity and power."

Released on an independent label and perhaps ahead of its time, Cross of Silence sold only in limited numbers.

Now with the backing of a major record label, her second album fulfils the promise of the first. Still there are the haunting piano lines and rich Macedonian vocals, but to these she has added her new found skills in the English language and the most contemporary beats London has to offer.

This is a universal album with appeal to music lovers of all tastes and of all nations. Spanning the genres of both popular and classical music, it weaves a rich tapestry of sound around the listener, implanting melodies and rhythms that, once heard and once felt, are impossible to ever forget.
